Breaking Down the Fall Hockomock Division Races

By Ryan Lanigan, Editor-in-Chief
As the Fall season inches closer to a close, almost all of the Hockomock League titles for the season have already been decided.
Football
For football, King Philip has clinched at least a share of the Kelley-Rex title. With a win on Saturday afternoon, the Warriors will win their first Kelley-Rex title straight out. North Attleboro has a shot to share the title with the Warriors (despite losing to them earlier in the season). If North beats Taunton on Friday night and Attleboro beats King Philip on Saturday, the two teams will be co-champions.
The Davenport side of football will only have one winner. Stoughton and Foxboro enter Friday night’s Game of the Week with 4-0 division records. The winner of the game will be declared the Davenport champion, though both teams will go to the playoffs nonetheless.
Soccer
For soccer, the picture is clear for one division while the other will most likely come down to games on Monday. For the Kelley-Rex, Franklin has clinched both the boys and girls title again this year. That’s the fourth straight title for the boys and the third straight for the girls program.
On the Davenport, there’s still plenty to be figured out. The girls side only has two teams left – Oliver Ames and Foxboro. OA can clinch at least a share of the title with a win over Milford, which was scheduled for Thursday but no score was reported. A win over Milford would give OA 25 points with one game left. Foxboro must beat Sharon on Friday to stay in contention and then Monday’s game between the two would be the deciding game.
For the boys, there are only three teams left to win the title: Foxboro, Oliver Ames and Sharon. Canton is right in the mix but can only reach a maximum of 20 points, which both OA and Foxboro will go over no matter what. If Foxboro wins on Friday afternoon against Sharon, then the Warriors will clinch at least a share of their first ever Davenport title and Sharon would be eliminated from the race. If Foxboro and Sharon tie on Friday, Foxboro and Oliver Ames’ meeting on Monday would decide the title and Sharon would be mathematically eliminated.
If Sharon can beat Foxboro (again), then all three teams would have a chance at the title going into the weekend. Foxboro and OA would each have 20 points while Sharon would have 18 points with two games left. Sharon’s game against Stoughton on Saturday would determine how many teams are in the race come Monday. If Sharon beats Foxboro on Friday and Stoughton on Saturday, they could very well win at least a share of the title.
Here’s how each team could win the title:
Foxboro: A win over Sharon on Friday would clinch at least a share of the Davenport; A win over Sharon on Friday and a win or tie against Oliver Ames on Monday wins the Davenport outright; A loss to Sharon on Friday, a win over Oliver Ames on Monday and Sharon losing to Stoughton (Saturday) or Canton (Monday) wins it outright; A loss to Sharon on Friday, a win over Oliver Ames (Monday) and Sharon wins over Stoughton (Saturday) and Canton (Monday) shares the Davenport. A tie with Sharon on Friday, plus a tie with OA on Monday, plus Sharon beating Stoughton (Saturday) and Canton (Monday) would result in a share with the Sharon. A loss to Sharon on Friday, plus a tie against Oliver Ames, plus a Sharon won over either Stoughton or Canton and a tie against the other results in a three-way tie.
Oliver Ames: A Sharon win over Foxboro on Friday, a win over Foxboro on Monday, plus a Sharon loss to Stoughton (Saturday) or Canton (Monday) wins it outright; A Foxboro-Sharon tie on Friday, a tie with Foxboro on Monday, and a Sharon loss to Stoughton (Saturday) or Canton (Monday) would share the title with Foxboro; A Foxboro win over Sharon on Friday and a win over Foxboro on Monday would share the Davenport. A Sharon win over Foxboro, a tie against Foxboro, a Sharon win over Stoughton or Canton and a tie against the other is a three way tie for the Davenport.
Sharon: A win over Foxboro on Friday, plus wins over Stoughton (Saturday) and Canton (Monday) coupled with a Foxboro-Oliver Ames tie wins the Davenport outright; A win over Foxboro on Friday, plus wins over Stoughton (Saturday) and Canton (Monday), plus an OA win over Foxboro on Monday would share the title with OA. A win over Foxboro, Foxboro and OA tying on Monday and a Sharon win over either Stoughton or Canton and a tie against the other results it a three way share.

Volleyball
One of the clearest pictures if volleyball. On the Kelley-Rex side, King Philip took home another division title with a 15-1 record. The Warriors swept all 10 of their Kelley-Rex games with their only blemish coming against Canton.
Canton went 16-0 and won the Davenport for the fifth straight year. They are the only team to win a Davenport title and they’ve currently won eight straight league championships, dating back to 2007 before the split.
Field Hockey
The Kelley-Rex field hockey race got very interesting down the stretch, but it was a game between two other teams that decided the race. A North Attleboro win over Franklin secured the crown for Mansfield, who are 12-1-2 in league play with just one game left. Franklin wasn’t far behind with a 10-2-3 league record while North Attleboro, arguably the hottest team in the league right now, has a 9-3-2 league record.
There was a change of the guard on the Davenport side as Oliver Ames was able clinch the small side title outright with an undefeated season. The Tigers only played Hockomock teams and finished 13-0-3. Their ties came against Franklin, Canton and Mansfield – three perennial field hockey programs.
Cross Country
On the Kelley-Rex side, it was more of the same as both the Mansfield boys and girls finished with 5-0 marks against league opponents to claim yet another Kelley-Rex title.
On the Davenport, the Oliver Ames girls went unbeaten in five meets to claim the title while Sharon boys went 5-0 to grab their first title in a long time.
Golf
Golf is a little different than the rest of the Hockomock sports. While games against opposite division opponents count for virtually every other Hockomock sport, they don’t for golf. Division champions are determined based on the 10 matches you play against your own division while you are only required to play against three crossover opponents.
Mansfield took the crown for the Kelley-Rex, compiling a an 8-2 division record.
On the Davenport side, Oliver Ames took home the crown for the second straight year with a 9-0 record.
