The Hockomock League had their Golf Championship on Thursday at Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy, MA. The day featured the top 3 players from all 12 schools competing in both an individual and team competition. The student athletes worked hard all season to earn a spot to play in this prestigious event at one of the finest golf courses in Massachusetts. The weather and the golf did not disappoint as a great day was had by all involved.
In the team competition, the Canton Bulldogs led the way firing a very impressive team score of 240. Sam Riemer led the way for Canton with a 77. Brian Brooks and JC Marcone shot 79 and 84 respectively to lead the Bulldogs to the victory. Congratulation to Coach Spillane and the entire Canton team on a great victory! Taunton High School, a new addition to the league in 2012, finished in 2nd place as a team finishing five strokes back with a score of 245. Ryan Rollo led the way for the Tigers shooting a 78. Jarrett Leonard added an 83 and Mario Wilson chipped in with an 84 for Taunton to finish as the runner up. Rounding out the top three in the team competition was Oliver Ames who finished with a team score of 248. OA was led by James Shalloup who set the pace with an 81. Nick Carter, 82, and Sam Minsky, 85, played solid golf as well for Oliver Ames.
In the individual competition, well, it was no competition. North Attleboro senior captain Eric Marchetti ran away from the field and set the bar high for everyone on the day. Eric played outstanding golf en route to a four under par round of 67 on the par 71 layout. Eric wrapped up a stellar four year career at North Attleboro by capturing the individual championship. Sam Riemer (Canton) finished in 2nd with a round of 77. Ryan Rollo (Taunton) and Ben Bedarian (Franklin) finished tied for 3rd with rounds of 78. Rounding out the top 5 was Brian Brooks (Canton) who shot a 79. The talent and depth of the league was on display as 28 golfers broke 90 on the very difficult layout at Granite Links.
The Hockomock Championship concluded the season for some players and teams but many are not done yet as they will be moving on to play in the state tournament. Eight of the twelve teams in the league have qualified for the MIAA sectional tournament on Monday, October 22nd. Hockomock teams are scattered throughout divisions 1, 2 and 3 and will be playing at multiple locations on Monday. You can expect to see some of these schools advancing to play in the MIAA state finals on Monday, October 29th.
